According to Guangzhou Rail Transit Network Planning (2018-2035), Guangzhou has programmed 53 rail transit lines with a total length of 2029 km, including high-speed metro lines, rapid metro lines, and general-speed ones.

As stated in the Planning, there will be 5 high-speed metro lines stretching 452 km, 11 rapid metro lines stretching 607 km, and 37 general-speed ones stretching 970 km in the city.

The five 160 km/h high-speed metro lines will extend from Guangzhou to Foshan, Dongguan, Zhongshan, and Zhuhai, forging a one-hour living circle. In the near term, Guangzhou will start the construction of 4 intercity high-speed railways, including the Nansha-Zhuhai (Zhongshan) line, Guangzhou East Railway Station-Huadu Tiangui line, Fangcun-Baiyun International Airport line, and Foshan-Dongguan line (via Guangzhou).

Furthermore, Guangzhou Metro revealed its participation in building the Guangzhou-Shenzhen High-speed Maglev Railway in its annual report released recently.

Layout plans show that the railway will set off from Guangzhou East Railway Station, then go southward across Nansha and the Pearl River estuary, entering Shenzhen’s Bao’an and Qianhai, and end up in Hong Kong’s West Kowloon. Speeding at 600 km/h, the railway will take you from Guangzhou to Hong Kong in a mere 20 minutes.

Guangzhou Metro also said that it will advance construction of 11 new metro lines totaling 292 km and open Line 18, the initial section of Line 22, and the west extension of Line 7 in 2021.
