Nansha Wetland Park

Nansha Wetland is located at the geometric center of the Pearl River Delta, in the southernmost district of Nansha, Guangzhou. Covering approximately 6,670 hectares, it is the largest coastal mangrove wetland in Guangzhou, and it is often referred to as the “kidney” of the mega city due to its essential ecological functions, including water purification and habitat preservation.

The reserve is home to over 300 plant species, including 11 true mangroves and 4 semi-mangroves, which create unique ecosystems such as the reed community and the Sonneratia community. These habitats support more than 200 bird species, including 4 national first-class protected species, namely, the white-tailed sea eagle, black-faced spoonbill, oriental white stork, and black stork, as well as second-class protected species such as the white spoonbill, brown-winged cuckoo, and white-fronted goose.

Situated along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, the Nansha Wetland serves as a vital stopover and feeding ground for over 100,000 migratory birds each year, earning its reputation as a paradise for these avian travelers in the Pearl River Delta.

Mangrove forest

After nearly three decades of scientific conservation and ecological development, Nansha Wetland has demonstrated remarkable biodiversity advantages. It conserves 11 species of true mangroves and 4 species of semi-mangroves, represented by Aegiceras corniculatum, Kandelia obovata, and Sonneratia apetala. In 2024, four new mangrove species, including Clerodendrum inerme, Barringtonia racemosa, Rhizophora stylosa, and Avicennia marina, were introduced and planted, bringing the total number of higher plants to approximately 318 species.

Beyond flora, the wetland is home to 34 species of macrobenthic animals, 345 species of phytoplankton, 34 species of fish, and 67 species of insects. Its avian diversity is particularly striking.

Leveraging its abundant wetland natural resources, Nansha Wetland has continuously improved its science and education facilities, developed diverse eco-science products, and carried out nature education activities to attract widespread public participation. These efforts have earned it multiple honors, including "Guangdong Provincial Science Education Base," "Guangzhou Primary and Secondary School Research and Study Practice Education Base," and "Guangdong Provincial Nature Education Base."

Bird watching activities held in Nansha Wetland

Bird watching

The optimal birdwatching season runs from November to March, when over 100,000 migratory birds—including endangered Black-faced Spoonbills—congregate here. Visit the bird-watching deck in the wetland for panoramic views. However, the deck will be closed during heavy rain.

Timing: Arrive at dawn or dusk for peak activity.

Gear: Bring binoculars and a telephoto lens for close-ups.

There is a cap on the daily number of visitors admitted. During high seasons, it's advisable to make a reservation. Admission is 40 RMB per person for the pedestrian sightseeing area and  120 RMB per person for the sightseeing area and a tour boat ride.

TransportationMetro:

1) Get off at Jiaomen Station (蕉門(mén)站), Guangzhou Metro Line 4, transit Bus G1 to tourist area of Nansha Wetland.

2) Get off at Exit B of Wanqingsha Station (萬(wàn)頃沙), Guangzhou Metro Line 18, transit Bus No. 25 to tourist area of Nansha Wetland.
Driving: The Nansha Wetland is about 60 kilometers or an hour's drive from the city center of Guangzhou.
