A conference on accelerating the development of a strong transportation province and the 2025 provincial transportation work meeting was held recently. The meeting summarized the work done in 2024, outlined key tasks for 2025, and interpreted the high-quality development plan for the transportation sector over the next three years (2025-2027).

In 2024, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) continued to integrate and develop the "one-hour traffic circle," with the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (HZMB) experiencing an approximately 90% year-on-year increase in traffic. Throughout the year, Guangdong completed investments of 214.22 billion yuan in highways and waterways, ranking among the top in the country. Provincial railway investments totaled 108.29 billion yuan, accounting for about 1/8 of the national railway investment. The expressway kilometers exceeded 11,700, ranking first in the country for 11 consecutive years, while the operational high-speed railway was the first in the nation to exceed 3,000 kilometers.

The province also led the country in various indicators, including urban rail transit operational mileage, urban rail transit passenger volume, expressway traffic volume, port passenger and container throughput, and airport passenger and cargo throughput.

In 2025, Guangdong plans to complete nine expressway projects and achieve the goal of opening 12,000 kilometers of expressway to traffic by the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan" period. Additionally, eight provincial railway projects, including the Guangzhou-Zhanjiang high-speed railway, will be completed. High-speed rail connections at a speed of 350 km/h between eastern and western Guangdong are also planned. The province will also accelerate the upgrade of national and provincial roads and the construction of port and shipping projects.

Over the next three years, the high-quality development plan for transportation outlines 33 specific tasks across seven key areas. These include: establishing seamless cross-border and interprovincial transportation corridors and enhancing connectivity with Hong Kong and Macao; developing an integrated and efficient urban cluster transportation network and fostering model cities for low-altitude transportation; building a comprehensive transportation network that spans both urban and rural areas, while further integrating urban and rural transport systems; promoting cost efficiency and quality improvements in logistics and integrating transportation and logistics industries; advancing a green transportation system, with technology driving the development of smart transportation; and ensuring robust transportation safety, improving the transportation emergency response system, and enhancing the safety level of infrastructure.
