Cathay Pacific launched a new direct flight route on April 28 between Urumqi and Hong Kong, marking a significant step in enhancing air connectivity between China's far western region and one of Asia's major financial hubs.

The Hong Kong-based carrier now operates four flights per week on this route, using Airbus A330-300 aircraft. This expansion further cements Cathay Pacific's position as the airline with the most extensive network between Hong Kong and mainland cities, now covering 22 destinations with approximately 300 round trips weekly during peak travel seasons.

In addition to passenger travel, the route also offers expanded cargo capabilities. Cathay Pacific plans to utilize the aircraft's bellyhold capacity (the transportation of goods in the lower deck of passenger aircraft) to enhance its cold chain and high-value goods logistics services, creating a streamlined air freight corridor from Central Asia through Xinjiang and Hong Kong to Southeast Asia and beyond.

The timing aligns with China's easing of transit visa policies, which is expected to attract more international tourists to explore Xinjiang's unique landscapes via Hong Kong. The route is viewed as a key enabler for promoting western China's tourism and trade.
