Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport and Hong Kong International Airport have secured positions in a global ranking of the world's most valuable aviation hubs, highlighting China's increasing influence in the global air travel sector.

The list, released on April 22 by Chinese research firm GYBrand, ranked Baiyun Airport 15th and Hong Kong Airport 16th, based on factors such as brand strength, sustainability, and financial performance, rather than passenger numbers alone. Four Chinese airports made the top 20, including Shanghai's Pudong (4th) and Beijing Capital (10th). GYBrand, founded in 2017, is China's only representative among the world's top five brand valuation agencies.

In 2024, Baiyun Airport achieved significant breakthroughs in passenger throughput, cargo and mail throughput, and transit passenger volume, earning recognition as one of the "Top 10 Busiest Airports in the World 2024" by Airports Council International (ACI). It handled 76.4 million passengers and 2.38 million tonnes of cargo, reflecting increases of 21% and 17% year-on-year, while reducing energy use to a six-year low.

The hub now connects to all 10 ASEAN nations and has launched its first-ever direct flights to Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and South America. A fourth runway, set to open in 2025, will solidify its status as the only four-runway airport in the Greater Bay Area.

Hong Kong International Airport maintained its position as the world's busiest cargo hub for the 14th consecutive year. Its new third runway and logistics partnerships with mainland cities strengthen its role as a global trade bridge.

The report also emphasized artificial intelligence (AI) as a transformative factor, with airports implementing smart systems for security, maintenance, and energy efficiency. Additionally, China's relaxed 144-hour visa-free transit policy, extended to 240 hours in December 2024, has led to a surge in foreign arrivals, boosting tourism and airport revenues.
