On April 4, during the Chinese traditional Qingming Festival, traffic volume on the Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link reached a new peak of 178,400 vehicle trips, according to the Guangdong Provincial Communications Group.

With a noticeable increase in people returning home for ancestral worship during the holiday, traffic heading from Shenzhen toward Zhongshan and western Guangdong surged significantly. The entire link operated under consistently high traffic levels, setting a new record since its opening.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link is the world's first infrastructure project combining a two-way eight-lane undersea tunnel, an underwater interchange, and a large-scale sea bridge complex. The transition between bridge and tunnel includes a 6-kilometer-long incline, adding to the engineering challenge. It officially opened on June 30, 2024. It is 24 kilometers long and can be reached from Shenzhen to Zhongshan in 30 minutes.

During the Qingming holiday, to ensure smooth traffic flow and safety, a joint emergency response mechanism has been established between traffic police departments in Shenzhen, Zhongshan, and Guangzhou, along with coordination on adjacent road sections. Multiple points have been set up on the East and West Artificial Islands and Ma'an Island in Zhongshan. Road administration, traffic police, fire services, and emergency medical teams are stationed on-site and centrally coordinated through a road network dispatch center for safety and smooth operations.

Over 180 people from road administration, rescue, and maintenance units were deployed, along with nearly 100 specialized vehicles. Additionally, more than 150 police from the three cities were mobilized to ensure order and traffic efficiency.

The return traffic peak began to emerge on the morning of April 6 at around 10 a.m.
